,My school does not offer many extracurricular science/math/engineering clubs because of resources and the passing rate of many classes is ~55-65%. The only thing I would like to change about the school are the lack of engineering courses that are being offered. And I feel like I need to clarify what balance, independence and passion mean at NCSSM. You are competing for slots against the kids in your high school for slots in top colleges and as your peers advance due to solid instruction and learning opportunities, merging back into a program where kids have stayed on track is hard. The school is very good as it has given me many opportunities to explore my interests and UNC Tuition Grant is very useful. The friendships and opportunities I've experienced here are on a completely different level from what I had at my old school (and I was from Chapel Hill). My kid started at NCSSM this year, so kid is about 2 months in. However, I believe that there are a significant number of students that had an awful experience at this school. Wouldn't this look bad on your transcript? ,Sodid you get in?! The research thing is just not a realistic option for probably 90% of the kids who come to NCSSM. You can get some help there. Be prepared for that going in. may be your best chance to get in. I came from a very small high school and my math teacher could have run circles around all but one of my NCSSM math teachers. NCSSM has made the student and person I am today, and I would not be where I am without it. Some people will tell you it's hell. But it is correct to say that you will probably kill yourself for two years, endure emotional torture and physical discomfort, and make absolutely no difference in where you end up attending college.
