I had such high hopes for it, too, after reading the reviews here. It takes two matches and a strong effort to keep it lit, with puffing. After all these, Id recommend to smoke it dry (as dry as you can) with filter and packed medium (not loose nor tight). It needed a relight but left the pipe dry. The only flaws are frequent relights at the beginning due to the moisture levels and some gurgle. In the tin, this is dark and oily. Tonight I poured myself the last of a very old bottle of Laphroig. You get the picture? However I found the flavor profile to be relatively standard. I don't know what they did to produce it, but whatever it is, I truly hope they never cease! Two years later, it remains just as revelatory, and it's the only "regular" in my constantly expanding tobacco lineup. A full smoke, that will satisfy all who enjoy Latakia, with just the perfect accompaniment of Virginia's, Orientals, and Turkish. It's latakia is slightly understated, as compared to some of the other English blends, but it comes through nicely anyway. This is a great tobacco, worthy of praise. It's a very fine smoke. So, if you want to smoke this, make it one of the last bowl of the day, otherwise, if you smoke something lighter afterwards, it will taste bland. The Latakia is the first thing you notice upon opening the tin, and at first light. However, it is good that you need to relight it, and I actually encourage you to light it, smoke a few times, and then leave it in the pipe for about 5-10-15 minutes. I would contrast it with many of the other luxury 'English' (as Americans seem to call them - I'm English) blends containing Latakia, in that some of these have very little weight at all - you puff them in and out and there's nothing there but the dry, ashy, smokiness. It is among the best English blends ever made, though (gasp) I don't think it perfect. When something is built up to be this great you can only be let down. I tend to enjoy this tobacco best in a size 5 poker with a pretty deep bowl. It's great tobacco, but I can do without it as availability of SLF or Holly's Discovery is not a problem where I live and they satisfy my fix just as well. It has gorgeous crumbly flakes and despite the pungent smell ( like that of a farmyard I'm told), it burns very well with a rather pleasant room note. I don't know but the majority of reviewers say it contains an extremely mild flavoring. Penzance is a top nothc full English blend in the crumble cake form I like so much (though this is far more satisfying than Bengal Slices). Personally, I think Penzance is held in such high regard more to justify to one's self the time and considerable expense in acquiring any amount if it rather than its superiority to blends of similar quality. Hand blended, hard pressed, broad cut into thick flakes. It is filled with creamy spice and nuances, it cannot be compared. If you ever wanted Dunhill "Standard Mixture" to have less zing and more cream, this is the blend to do it. The only thing that helped fight that horrible taste was a nice bowl of Mac Baren Mixture!
