In the late 1960s, Bill and Margaret moved back to Missouri and resided in Oak Grove, where Bill decided to leave self-employment behind and work for Hall's department store in Kansas City. After returning from the Indian war he first engaged in the mercantile business and also in the manufacture of tobacco and was quite successful in both these lines of business, and then the Civil War broke out he had accumulated quite a competency.
